election day 2006
hey you! person out there who is "too lazy" to take advantage of your civic duty to vote for something... anything... when given the opportunity! you're annoying. for the record.
okay, so i got really super annoyed at my mom's husband this week because when he asked me if i was voting i said quickly, "no." he responded with a 2 minute tangent that was 2 minutes longer than i ever cared or wanted to hear about along the lines of, "we are privelidged as citizens of the united states to be able to vote. people died for your right to do this. there are so many countries who don't have the opportunity." etc. etc. etc. blah blah blah. obviously i came back with, "i know nothing about any of the candidates so it would actually be doing our state a disservice if i were to just pick some people and vote away." i wanted to call him an ass for telling me how he thought i should live my life.
i really, really hate to admit it... but i was wrong. it takes three seconds to learn any information about anyone online these days, let alone a super exposed candidate for office. and even if you can't take five minutes out of your day to learn about them, there were still issues on the ballot that i feel as though everyone would have an opinion about that didn't involve any candidates.
the proposed plan to ban gay marriage on the constitution, for instance, isn't something i feel as though anyone could be on the fence about. personally, i think the people that voted for this are archaic and antequated and the fact that anyone would still BLATENTLY discriminate against anyone is ludicrous. why not just reinstate slavery while you're at it. it's the flipping constitution, for god's sake. its purpose is to enforce equality... unite the nation... not create divisions.
my point in this argument is not simply to share my quick summarized opinion, but to attempt to find your reaction. if you agree or disagree with me, you had the right today to pick a side and support it, perhaps aiding in changing the way that our country lives.
i've never been political; i will admit learning about every single aspect of candidates is tedious sometimes... but in the long run it is incredibly worthwhile. granted, i only voted for three things today and lost all three, but it makes me that much more determined to take advantage of the opportunities i have every time i'm able to.
blaaaaaaaah. this is such a lame post, and i will never have accurate or correct words to use when it comes to politics, but hey, i've said my peace. go team. don't critisize.
side note: way to stay hicks, wisco. you guys are such haters.
